CLOSING OF THE BONES CEREMONY
Pregnancy and birth are transformative experiences, delivering a new mother to the other side, where she settles in with her baby and her motherhood. Many cultures around the world mark this passage by honoring her with special care, nutritious foods, and unique rituals. In the interest of caring for new mothers in our community during their postpartum passage, we are able to borrow some of these rituals from other cultures.
The Closing of the Bones Ceremony is borrowed from Central and South American countries. It is traditionally done 2-3 weeks after a woman gives birth, but can be done later, especially in the event of a cesarean birth. It pampers, soothes and heals a woman, body and soul.
This mini, spa-like experience takes place in the comfort of your own home. It starts with a full body massage, then an herbal bath and warming steam, and finishes with a ritual wrapping of the mother’s body, the closing of the bones, using a traditional woven cloth.
The entire ceremony lasts 2-3 hours and is different for every woman. For some, it is an opportunity to reflect on their journey, and release thoughts and feelings regarding their birth and postpartum transition. For others, it is a chance to simply be cared for, tenderly and quietly. For all, it is the acknowledgement that the passage from pregnancy through birth and motherhood deserves special recognition and loving support. I welcome the opportunity to honor your journey and share the Closing of the Bones ceremony with you.
